” Yosaku Tamba was born in the Kumadani region during the Kanei Era (1624-1644). The son of a farmer, he studied martial arts while working as an Umaoi (a person who helps load horses with baggage or passengers). He eventually went to Edo to become a samurai. Monzaemon Chikamatsu created a Jojuri (a type of dramatic recitation) that became quite famous, but that differs somewhat from the original legend. “Yurugi Jize”” (the guardian of children and travelers in Buddhism) is enshrined next to Yosaku’s birth place.”
