“The city of Sasayama was constructed around Sasayama Castle, itself built in 1609. Kawaramachi was established in 1620 and flourished as a business town. Traditional townhouses dating back from the Edo Era and early Showa period span 500 meters from east to west. Over 70 percent of these townhouses are made in the Tsumairi style (gable construction) and create the characteristic cityscape of the area. In December 2004, this area was designated a National Traditional Architectures Preservation District.”
