“ There are “Three major strange festivals” in Sasayama. “Hamokiri Festival” at Sawada Hachiman Shrine, “Frog Dance” at Onobara Sumiyoshi Shrine and “The rice cake Festival” at Shinjyo Todoroki Hachiman Shrine. The “Hamokiri Festival” is a rituals to imitate a large snake extermination. It was written by Kunio Yanagida as a strange festival in “”A Festival of Japan””. The “Frog Dance” is a dance performed with whistles and drums. It is valuable folk entertainment which has succeeded due to word of mouth from generation to generation lasting 200 years. Large and small rice cakes are made at home.The rice cakes are take to the shrine the next day for the “Rice Cake Festival” where they divided among the parishoners.”
